To say we move a lot is kind of an
understatement for our family. In the past 12 years we have moved 10
times. A few places we have gotten to stay for a "while" and
others have been quite short. Each place is remembered by the people we loved
there, and friendships made have become a part of us forever. We are truly
grateful we have had the opportunity to know and love so many and that they
have been a part of our Journey.
Our Journey to Las Vegas was intended to be for a "while", we had hoped to be there for several years while Lonnie helped his company build 2 different power plants, but recently the 2nd project was cancelled. In October, Bechtel asked Lonnie to help out on a project in the Bay Area for a couple of months. It was the plan that he would return to the Vegas project in December to finish out there until spring. Well they soon decided they needed him to stay in California, surprise surprise. (insert sarcasm here). We now faced the decision to continue living apart as we have for the last 3 months or pack up our kiddos and go be with Daddy. Everything reasonable said we should keep the kids in school and just endure for stability sake. However, it was terrible to be apart, and when Lonnie came home for weekends it was torture to watch Ty say goodbye to Daddy. After much consideration and prayer we decided we should all join Lonnie in California, but we ultimately left it up to the kids. They unanimously voted to leave our beautiful home in Nevada and go be with Lonnie.
We understand that this is not the answer for every family that has to live apart because of work, but this was what we felt was the right answer for our little family. So...now came the next challenge...where to live? No one rents houses short term. Apartments are available on short term leases but WOW they are expensive! What to do?? We almost rented an apartment but at the last minute pulled out because it just didn't feel right to sign the lease. So what did we choose to do???
We joined the ranks of the gypsies! We are homeschooling the kids and living in a 2 bedroom fifth wheel trailer. We have 4 bunks in the back bedroom and a queen size bed in the front bedroom. Well school officially starts Monday so I'll keep you posted how that turns out. For now though we have survived one week of life in the trailer. We live in a very nice little RV park that is very near a wonderful 2 mile bike trail along the Bay that ends at a Marina and a Park. One week down and many more to go, but we are together and there are quite a few bright spots to our tiny living quarters: cleaning is much quicker, the kids are learning how to do dishes by hand, laundry doesn't take all day when you can put all 4 loads in to wash/dry at once, the kids are walking the dog 3 times a day (and picking up after him), just to name a few. I think that maybe this current stop in our journey is for me to learn a few things about mothering my children differently....Wish me luck, and most importantly divine inspiration! Check back soon for more adventures in gypsy life!
